The logo that you see stating “Ad Free Blog” is attached to specific statements, notably the following:
1. That I am opposed to the use of corporate advertising on blogs.
2. That I feel the use of corporate advertising on blogs devalues the medium.
3. That I do not accept money in return for advertising space on my blog.
That being said, I have to confess that while I firmly believe in keeping this blog free of advertisement, I do not necessarily believe that businesses should never advertise on blogs. I do believe that corporate advertising has the potential to devalue the medium if people are not careful.
Part of my job involves marketing so I understand the potential for businesses to be a part of the blogging community, however that being said … ever since the mid-late ninties when I first came online, I have always despised advertisement on personal websites and vowed never to have ads on my personal site. This is to some degree why I have always tried to program or setup my own site rather than use free providers such as Geocities and Angelfire. If I do happen to support a company, it is because they have earned my loyalty. My purpose here is to be as transparent and accountable as possible to people who come across this blog, to the general public, and ultimately to myself and my principles.
Regardless, you can rest assured that all of the blog posts and its opinions are from my brain (property of Ehren Cheung) and no one elses! Not my employer’s, not any association I belong to, not any publication I subscribe to — no one but me! If you have any questions or would like to discuss this issue with me, please feel free to contact me via email or leave a comment here.
