That Doom Song

We’re all concerned to some degree.  We’re all worried to some extent.  That said, I’ve been hearing a few too many doom songs lately over the news.  If the current system is not working, then this is the best opportunity and time for anyone to experiment and push forward their new ideas.

Otherwise, we can keep listening to the doom song — courtesy of GIR, from Invader Zim, a favourite animated television series of mine created by the very talented Jhonen Vasquez.

Please remain seated for take out

I ran across this clip over at The Animation Show (which by the way guys … when are you going to show up in Toronto already? … I mean … there were showings in Ottawa this summer! You’ve got to drop by Canada’s biggest city at some point.)

Anyways about a week ago I hopped on a Air Canada flight back to Toronto from Vancouver and there happened to be a small kerfuffle surrounding who was sitting near the emergency exit. Apparently there was a man sitting next to the emergency exit who did not speak English very fluently (possibly none at all) and had to be moved to another seat. He seemed to understand enough English (or general hand gestures made towards him) to realize that he was being moved to another seat (and made some attempts at refusing to budge) but I don’t think he liked the fact that he had to move away from the window … not that anyone generally would.

I just found it peculiar because I’ve never come across a situation like that before. I can understand the need to understand English but I also wonder what happens during international flights then? Is a particular language required depending on the flight or is it English?

Maybe the man should have arm wrestled for the seat. It’s all about customer service and expectations — I think if you’re going to move someone from their original spot next to the window, perhaps they deserve something in return for the unexpected change in service. Maybe a free meal or a better seat in first class?

Here’s a hilarious clip from The Life and Times of Tim:

Sometimes I feel like the dog …

I can keep trying to communicate initiatives or converse about ideas with clients but it just doesn’t seem to get through. Thank goodness for things like, sleep, and the next day.

Hat tip: PeeperLicious for pointing out the Calvacade which might I note, is a good online marketing campaign.

Leaping Through Time

No, not quite Quantum Leap although I did love that show.  I normally don’t tend to comment on adaptations of novels but this was quite different because it was not only turned into film, but also a live television series, Manga and anime.  I just so happened to stumble across it while flipping through my RSS feeds.

Interesting trailer although it really doesn’t give me much to work with.  Technically the anime film is two years old but since it took a year for it to migrate over to North America, it’s really only one year.

I’d recommend anyone interested in reading about the history of the novel, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shōjo) to check out the article on Wikipedia but beware of spoilers…

In the meanwhile, stop and view the trailer.

What’s most interesting about all of this was how I stumbled across this.  I wasn’t even looking for it.  More on that later.

It Was All Bland Until…

I saw the trailer for the Animation Show 4 had arrived! Thank you for making my day that much better.

I highly recommend checking out this show in your neighbourhood theatre, or in some cases for people like myself — drive 2 hours to a city where it is showing. Last year it wasn’t showing in Toronto so we drove to Waterloo!

Fighting Complacency and Procrastination

Marketing is key to engaging people. Causing individuals to begin examining and questioning their current behaviour has the potential to instigate change — even those who are reluctant may just turn their heads to see what the noise is all about. Well done Dave Schlafman.

Killer Bean - Killer Movie

As you may already know, I love animation and when I ran across this … I had the gut feeling that it was brilliant. Directed by Jeff Lew, the Lead Animator of Matrix Reloaded who quit his job and pursued his dream of creating an amazing looking film — Killer Bean Forever. All I have to say is that I am definitely looking forward to watching this film whenever it is out …

Kudos to you Jeff for all that effort and time! I will be one person to definitely support your film!

Tackling Adobe Flash - One Stick Man at a Time

Macromedia Adobe Flash has been around for quite some time. If you began using the Internet since the mid-1990s on a dial-up connection, you would have noticed the introduction and gradual rise of Flash technology in proportion to the number of Internet users that have broadband connections. Nowadays we don’t usually think of how long a Flash animation will take to load unless there was a Flash developer/designer that created a poorly made piece of Flash.

I’ve been toying with Flash more and more as I see it becoming a more relevant part of the Internet and that Google will soon introduce a version of their Analytics software that will make it easier for web content managers to be able to monitor how users interact with Flash components or a website completely designed in Flash. They’re already helping

Regardless, I’ve been playing with Flash, Actionscript and hoping to design my own first site in Flash soon! I know, nothing spectacular these days but I consider it one of my firsts.

My uncle sent this over the other day and I absolutely love this animation. I’m not sure if it was done in Flash but it definitely illustrates how users/designers using the program Adobe Flash Professional can feel when things just aren’t working out … or are they?

Kudos to Alan Becker for creating something awe-inspiring in a setting that Flash users/designers/developers see on a day-to-day basis. Go visit his DeviantArt site for more great creations!
